“but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:2
As one meditates on the law of the Lord, he has the opportunity to stand firm and prosper. Like a tree growing near the riverbank, the man of God leaning into and delighting in God’s Word has necessary sustenance to flourish. Here again, God reveals to us the life-giving power of His Word. It is absolutely necessary for us. Just as the tree cannot thrive without the water from the stream (v.3), so the believer cannot thrive without spending time in God’s Word.
Sure, you could survive with limited investment in the scriptures. People do it all the time, much in the same way that trees can grow in environments with less than favorable access to hydration. But when one chooses to pursue a lifestyle that avoids contact with God’s Word except for Sunday mornings, then one starves oneself of spiritual fervor. For this kind of believer, the depth of his relationship with God can never be all that it could be.
