The Words of Agur*

In chapter 30 of Proverbs, we have something different from the rest of the book. Agur, son of Jakeh, is stated as the author of the the proverbs that follow in the remainder of the chapter. Unfortunately, we do not really know who Agur is. What we do know is this: The text that follows in chapter 30 is a different writing style and has a different flow from everything preceding it in Proverbs.

We also know that God allowed chapter 30 to become part of His Holy Word. There are interesting features throughout the text we could discuss. This morning though, I find my attention drawn to verse 4.

Who has ascended to heaven and come down?
Who has gathered the wind in his fists?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is his son’s name?
Surely you know!

Proverbs 30:4 (ESV)

I am always amazed at the “living and active” nature of God’s Word. Here, around 800-1,000 years before Christ’s birth, we have the sayings of a wise man pointing directly at Jesus. Now, I don’t think Agur was intentionally aiming for the messiah when he made his statement. His statement in verse 4 seems to be an extension of the argument he started in verse 2.

Surely I am too stupid to be a man. I have not the understanding of a man. I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One.

Proverbs 30:2-3 (ESV)

In his argument, Agur then goes on to describe the person who would have knowledge of God. The man who would understand is the one who has been in His presence. The one who has been in heaven to see it for Himself and then stepped out to tell us. It just makes me think about one song in particular.

Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus, You silence fear
Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus

*Sorry. I usually have these posted early in the morning, but between the cold, a delay in the school day, and my laptop being in my office, this post is going up at 1:00pm instead of around 8:00am.
